Ringo's Starr power has Falls fans on alert Posted By BY JOHN LAW REVIEW STAFF WRITER Posted 1 day ago
Eyes peeled, people: A Beatle walks among us. With a summer tour kicking off next week at the Niagara Fallsview Casino, Ringo Starr is already in town for rehearsals. And the Fab Four'sdrummer isn't being shy. On Monday, Starr got his health food fix at the White Oaks Resort and Spa. "He just literally walked in," said Mary Muraco, owner of the spa's Naturally Healthy shop. "I called my sister and went, 'You know who's in the store right now? Ringo Starr.' She goes, 'Yeah, right.'" Sure enough, Starr and a few casino employees poked around the store for 20 minutes, stocking up on healthy grub to prepare for his 31-date All-Starr Band tour. Muraco has met several famous athletes and celebrities over the years, but admits she was "star struck" when Starr strolled in. "It must be the Beatle thing," she said. "There was a customer in the store going, 'Oh my God' ... she was freaking out too." Starr is no stranger to Ontario's casinos. He kicked off his past three All-Starr Band tours at Casino Rama in Orillia. Each time, he spent a week or more rehearsing at the venue and being spotted around town. Each tour features Starr and a lineup of musical friends. The 2008 edition boasts Billy Squier, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright, Hamish Stuart of The Average White Band, and former Men at Work singer Colin Hay. The first two shows are June 19 and 20 at the Avalon Ballroom inside the casino "The property is certainly buzzing with Ringo's arrival," said casino spokesman Greg Medulun. "Both shows in the Avalon have been sold out for some time now." A press conference has been arranged for June 18 at the Fallsview Casino, with Starr and the All-Starr Band in tow. Though Muraco grabbed a couple of autographs before Starr left the store, she's kicking herself for not having a camera. "No photos! I have security system in my store ... do you think I put it on? No. I have a camera phone ... you think I went and got it? No." After the meet and greet, Muraco helped Starr find what he wanted. For a 67-year-old drummer, he looked in great shape, she said. "He definitely knows what he wants. He's a vegan, and a very healthy person." hilsen Wogew Min Beatlesside
One of the two surviving members of the world's most famous rock band today offered a medley of some of the songs his All-Starr Band will perform Thursday when it begins its 2008 concert tour at the Fallsview Casino Resort.
Ringo Starr began with a reflective piece from his newest album, "Liverpool 8," and how destiny pulled him from his hometown roots. He then jumped into a snippet from one of his most recognizable Beatles songs, "With a Little Help From My Friends."
Ringo and the other six members of the touring band, all rock 'n' roll luminaries in their own right, have rehearsed since June 7 in the Avalon Ballroom at the Fallsview Casino. They have a two-night run there for their tour kickoff.
Ringo, characteristically, was generous in sharing the spotlight with his bandmates -- Edgar Winter, Average White Band founding member Hamish Stuart, Gary Wright, Billy Squier, Colin Hay and drummer Gregg Bissonette.
When asked how it felt to get a call from Ringo inviting each of them to join his summer band, which has 31 engagements in the United States and Canada, they all agreed it a was no-brainer to accept the chance to perform with a former Beatle. For some of them, though, it's not the first time. A few are veterans of the All-Starr Band, Stuart played with Paul McCartney's Wings (ikke helt sant, han spilte i McCartneys band i perioden 1989-1993, og det bandet het IKKE Wings), and Wright recorded with the late George Harrison.
Composer of the 1976 No. 1 hit song "Dream Weaver," Wright said he was thrilled when Ringo called him last February to be part of the band. "George did not do much touring and it has always been my dream to tour with a Beatle," Wright said.
Ringo said the band has been practicing eight hours a day, keeping them focused and working hard, but he said that when the tour starts "it will be two hours of pure joy" with every performance. And in putting his own fame into perspective, he said he is awestruck every morning he wakes up and looks out his hotel room window and sees Niagara Falls. "You think you're powerful...." he said, trailing off in deference to the natural wonder of the cataracts. When asked if he had a chance to visit Buffalo since he came here, he said no, but joked that he and the band "are all going to buy houses in Buffalo." Billy Squier expressed doubt, saying in apparent jest that he believes there's an old "outstanding arrest warrant" waiting for him in the City of Good Neighbors.

Ringo and his friends offer All-Starr performance BY LOU MICHEL -- News Staff Reviewer Updated: 06/20/08 9:14 AM
NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — If given a choice to see one of the two surviving Beatles, Ringo Starr might come in second.
But don’t dare tell that to the sold-out audience at Thursday night’s concert, kicking off Starr’s 2008 All- Star Band tour in North America.
Review
WHO: Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band
WHEN: Thursday night
WHERE: Avalon Theatre of Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. Another performance at 9 tonight.
The Fab Four’s beat keeper put on a wildly entertaining show, thanks in large part to the musicians he recruited for his latest version of the summer band: Edgar Winter, Hamish Stuart, Gary Wright, Billy Squier, Colin Hay and accomplished drummer Gregg Bisonnette.
At times, they stole the show, and Starr was all the happier for it. His jovial bantering with the audience also made it seem like everyone in the Avalon Ballroom at Fallsview Casino was the collective Fifth Beatle.
Dressed casually in black while donning his trademark dark shades, the soon-to-be 68-year-old drummer jumped right into a familiar repertoire that included an early solo hit, “It Don’t Come Easy,” and a Beatles song, “What Goes On.”
Squier then wailed “Lonely Is the Night” on his lead guitar, with Starr on the drums pounding his way up to a volatile conclusion that put some in the audience in mind of the rock ’n’ roll halls of yesterday, though no one reported bleeding eardrums.
Wild man Winter then proclaimed himself “no smarter than a fifth-grader” and proceeded to demonstrate his great store of talent by jumping into “Free Ride.”
Next it was Hay’s turn to add a mesmerizing rendition of “Down Under” from his old band Men at Work. At one point, perhaps inspired by a member of the audience who started dancing like his pants were on fire in front of the stage, Hay, refusing to be outdone, danced a fierce jig to the delight of the audience.
Wright, who calls gentle George Harrison his “spiritual mentor,” came front and center just in time to calm everyone down with a crooning of his hit, “Dream Weaver.”
And, at last, Starr returned to ratchet the mood back up with his Beatles song, “Boys,” which was followed by Stuart’s “Pick Up the Pieces.”
The show also featured the title song of the same name from his new album, “Liverpool 8.” There was, of course, at the finale, one of Starr’s best-known Beatles songs, “With a Little Help From My Friends” (truer words could not be sung, considering the make-up of his All-Star Band) and a parting tribute to John Lennon, “Give Peace a Chance.”
On the topic of peace, Starr, who will celebrate his birthday July 7, made a special request of his fans during a media promotional event for the tour Wednesday.
“No matter where you are, at noon that day [July 7], whether you’re in a room, shop or bus, just stop and say, ‘Peace and love,’ ” he said, waving his hands in peace signs.
And perhaps that best characterized the happy-go-lucky stage persona of ringleader Ringo Starr, whose glow Thursday night lit up the Avalon Ballroom. hilsen Wogew Min Beatlesside

Ringo and the All-Starrs: A fab night at the Avalon Posted By JOHN LAW Posted 18 hours ago
GT O’Rourke had been waiting months to indulge his inner Beatle. Thursday night, it was time to twist and shout.
Beatle fans came from hundreds of kilometres away to savour Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band at the Niagara Fallsview Casino, kicking off a summer tour with two dates at the Avalon Ballroom.
For O’Rourke, who claims to be the biggest Beatles fan in Niagara Falls, this was no mere concert.
“It’s a big deal,” he said, sporting purple shades, a mop top and assorted Beatles buttons on his jacket. “They made me who I am.”
With more than 4,000 pieces of memorabilia, O’Rourke lives and breathes The Beatles. And he wasn’t alone Thursday - fans of the Fab Four filled the 1,500-seat Avalon buzzing with the anticipation of being so close to one of their idols.
Jeff Maas made the trek from Erie, Pennsylvania sporting a Beatles t-shirt and dealing with some butterflies. After a lifelong obsession, it was his first time seeing one of the legends live.
He was six years old when The Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964.
“Right there and then, I said I wanted to play guitar,” said Maas after forking over $85 for two Ringo Starr shirts: One for him and one for his wife Barb.
“I married into it,” she said.
In addition to shirts, coffee mugs and tour programs, some of Starr’s artwork was also for sale in the lobby. Limited edition signed prints were priced between $800 and $1,400, and a few eager fans gladly paid.
Both Avalon shows quickly sold out and a large group of people waited outside the theatre Thursday hoping for some tickets to become available.
Minutes before the show started, Tamara W. from Pittsburgh stood with her husband hoping for good news.
“If we don’t get in, we’ll just go over to the casino,” she said. “It’s worth a shot.”
With all this buzz, the show itself had plenty to live up to. But soon after taking the stage with an abbreviated “A Little Help From My Friends” and his solo hit “It Don’t Come Easy,” Starr was relaxed and cracking jokes.
“Nice to see the people with the old t-shirts on,” he said.
After the first few songs, Starr went behind the drum kit and gave the floor to his band – Billy Squier, Gary Wright, Edgar Winter, Marvin Hamish of Average White Band and Colin Hay of Men at Work. The format is the same for every All-Starr band tour: Everyone plays a few of their own hits in-between Starr’s songs.
For a band that has been rehearsing barely ten days, they were remarkably tight. Hay’s “Down Under” and “Who Can It Be Now” were lively crowd-pleasers (highlighted by the spastic dance moves of one die-hard fan in the front row); Squier cut loose on “Lonely Is the Night” and “The Stroke,” while Wright got the crowd pumped with his ‘70s classics “Dream Weaver” and “Love is Alive.”
If the audience wasn’t familiar with Hamish, they sure recognized the groovy “Pick Up the Pieces” – a full-blown jam which had the Avalon bopping. It was topped by Winter’s “Frankenstein,” which had him racing around the stage playing sax, keyboards and drums. As always, it brought the house down.
“Being in this band, you wish you’d done all those numbers,” quipped Starr.
Lively as they were, the crowd saved most of its love for Beatles rockers like “What Goes On” and “I Want To Be Your Man.”
Just before “Boys,” Starr said, “I’ve been doing this one for a long time … and I still do because I love it.”
The 67-year-old Starr looked remarkably fit, though he wasn’t shy about goofing on his age. After a robust “Yellow Submarine,” he told the crowd, “We’ve come to a beautiful moment in the show … where I have to go lay down now.”
This is the tenth incarnation of the All-Starr Band since 1989 – the previous three tours launched at Casino Rama in Orillia.
Starr threw in a few surprises for the new one, including the romp “Oh My My” (“The first time live on any stage,” he said) and – after the set-closing “With a Little Help From My Friends” – a brief bit of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance.”
A fitting end to a night of Ringo’s patented peace and love. hilsen Wogew Min Beatlesside

Fallsview Casino Resort, Niagara Falls - June 19, 2008 By JANE STEVENSON - Sun Media
NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - Ringo Starr is more than getting by with a little help from his friends judging by the fun and lively launch of his latest All-Starr Band tour on Thursday night with the first of two back-to-back shows at Fallsview Casino Resort's Avalon Ballroom.
Like every other All-Starr trek - he's been doing this since 1989 and launched at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ont., three times previously before making the switch to Fallsview this time out - the former Beatles drummer entertained a sold-out crowd of 1,500 with both his solo material and Fab Four hits.
Meanwhile, returning bandmates Colin Hay (Men at Work), Edgar Winter, Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), and Billy Squier, along with newcomer Gary Wright, performed their individual chart-toppers.
But punching up the energy this time out - other than Starr himself who was a bouncing, boyish bubble of enthusiasm - was Stuart, whose funky AWB's hits like Pick Up The Pieces and Work To Do really sounded remarkable in a live setting, and the multi-talented Winters on sax, synthsizers and drums, sometimes just during on one song like Frankenstein.
Wright's Dream Weaver (whose title was inspired by the writings of an Indian mystic recommended by George Harrison, whose first solo album, All Things Must Pass, he worked on) and My Love Is Alive also proved to be crowd favourites along with Hay's Land Down Under and Who Can It Be Now, Winter's Free Ride and Squier's The Stroke.
But it was the 67-year-old Starr who was the main attraction given his musical legacy that was touched upon several times during the two-hour-and-15-minute show with such Beatles classics as Boys, Yellow Submarine, I Wanna Be Your Man, and With A Little Help From My Friends, his own Harrison tribute Never Without You and the show ending cover of John Lennon's Give Peace A Chance.
After a snippet of With A Little Help From My Friends, Starr began the evening in earnest with his solo hit, It Don't Come Easy, before beginning what would prove to be a long night of amusing stage banter.
"I'm a Canadian and I'm okay," said Starr, riffing on Monty Python's I'm A Lumberjack And I'm Okay.
Squier was the hardest rocking of the bunch with the plugged-in Lonely Is The Night faring better than an acoustic solo version of In The Dark, which didn't really work.
Hay was the most naturally engaging performer as he provoked an enthusiastic male audience member in the front row to do some mighty dance moves during Land Down Under - "I want what you're on!" he said - and got the audience to chime in with a spirited singalong during his solo acoustic version of his new song, Are You Looking At Me?
"You know what is happening now - you're a failure if the guy doesn't dance during your song," lamented Starr after the first mad display of dancing.
"I don't care how drunk you are, you aren't coming up here," he added later.
Still, Starr himself got caught up in the excitement of his own tour launch and made the band restart the beginning of Liverpool 8, the title track from his latest album, when he missed the cue.
"I'm too excited," he admitted.
And after a particularly joyous version of Yellow Submarine, Starr left the stage for three songs saying:
"I have to go have a lie down now. I don't know, (the energy) comes from some place."
It was also fun to watch newcomer and second drummer Gregg Bissonette get such a kick out of playing alongside Starr, who finally drew the audience to the front of the stage by the end of the night.
