The last time I was at the Santa Barbara Bowl for a concert was in October 1976 to see Bruce Springsteen. (That was only a few months after I saw Paul McCartney and Wings at the L.A. Forum.)
Last night, I was one of the lucky 5,000 fans who got to see Sir Paul at this most intimate venue. The Santa Barbara Bowl is a treasure, but Mr. McCartney is beyond being a treasure…he’s the greatest songwriter of all time and always an incredible performer. He’s been my favorite since the Beatles opened their first Ed Sullivan appearance with “All My Loving.”
He could have played for six hours and not included every great song I wanted to hear. But he sure covered a lot of Beatles ground, including my all-time favorite Beatles record, “Hey Jude.”
The entire set list is in the comments. So many great songs-still thrilling was the showstopper, “Live and Let Die,” personal faves like “I’ve Just Seen A Face,” “Blackbird,” and “Let It Be,” which he prefaced with a story about his mother coming to him in a dream and telling him to “Let It Be.”
And for the first time, I saw “Now and Then” live, and with the screens filled with Beatles imagery, it carried all the emotion one would expect from the last Beatles song.
Almost forgot to mention that he opened the show with “Help,” which was really exciting. First time I ever heard that live…and put me right back in the Larchmont Theater where I saw the Beatles in color for the first time back in 1965.
For two hours, Paul and his always amazing band (Abe, Rusty, Brian and Wix just are incredible) plus a three piece horn section (especially important on “Got To Get You Into My Life”) and a spectacular visual show behind Macca and on the screens made this a once in a lifetime memory.
Thanks to an old friend, we were able to get tickets.
Unforgettable night.
